چکیده

Presented here is an analysis of the effects of soil-foundation-structure interaction (SFSI) on seismic response of highway bridges. Of particular importance is the issue of input motions, their scaling and application to the SFS models. The analysis presented in this paper addresses the influence of inelastic behavior of both the soil and the structural components during seismic response evaluation of highway bridge systems. At the system level, the additional flexibility introduced by the soilfoundation system results in increased displacement demands under moderate to severe ground motions. Additionally, it is also demonstrated that that SFS interaction can sometimes have a beneficial effect on the superstructure response and sometimes produce detrimental effects on the system behavior and is dependent on the characteristics of the earthquake motion. It is shown that each SFS intearacton problem has to be analyzed fully and that it is almost impossible to draw general conclusions about the behavior of the SFS system during seismic motions.

Evaluation of Seismic Behavior of Steel Moment Resisting Frames Considering Nonlinear Soil-structure Interaction

In structural analysis, the base of structures is usually assumed to be completely rigid. However, the combination of foundation and the subsurface soil, makes in fact a flexible-base for the soil-structure system. It is well-known that the structural responses can be significantly affected by incorporating the Soil-structure Interaction (SSI) effects. The aim of the present study is to provide...

A Comparison of Different Non-linear Numerical Models for Pier Shaft Interaction Analysis for study of the Seismic Performance of Bridges

The AASHTO code of practice for design of bridges shows that the ductility level for foundation is given equal to one. Bridges are classified in three classes. For class of essential and normal bridges a question for not to use ductility level due to the importance of bridges’ costs is become an important item in different countries particularly in Middle east. This paper aimed to study on pe...

Seismic Behavior and Dissipated Plastic Energy of Performance-Based-Designed High-Rise Concrete Structures with Considering Soil–Structure Interaction Effect

Since the structure and foundation are built on soil, the soil is the major platform by which seismic vibrations are transmitted to the structure, and has noticeable effects on the response and behavior of structure during earthquakes. In this research, the recently introduced Performance-based plastic design (PBPD) and its modified Performance-based plastic design (MPBPD) method in which soil ...

Seismic Evaluation of Flexible-Base Low-Rise Steel Frames Using Beam-On-Nonlinear-Winkler-Foundation Modeling of Shallow Footings

Recent investigations have shown that the influences of Soil-Structure Interaction (SSI) may be detrimental to the seismic response of structure, and hence neglecting this phenomenon in analysis and design may lead to an un-conservative design. The objective of this paper is to quantify the effects of nonlinear soil-structure interaction on the seismic response of a low-rise special moment fram...

The effect of earthquake frequency content and soil structure interaction on the seismic behavior of concrete gravity dam-foundation-reservoir system

The effect of frequency content on the dynamic response of concrete gravity dams is investigated in this paper. Dams are one of the most complex structures to handle when there is dynamic analysis involved. One of the influential parameters on these structureschr('39') seismic response is the frequency content of the earthquakes. An index to represent frequency content, which represents frequen...

Effects of Multiple Structure-soil-structure Interactions Considering the Earthquake Waveform and Structures Elevation Effects

The simultaneous effects of soil and existing structures are known as the site-city interaction (structure-soil-structure). The impact of site-city interaction on structure behavior is effective. Thus, this interaction in some regions decreases the responses while increases in other areas. In addition, the site-city interaction of many parameters including the soil type, density rate, height of...
